You will probably need to assign TCP/IP, NetBUI, or IPX networking protocols to your ethernet network adapter card (found in Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Network). If using the TCP/IP protocol on your network adapter, you will probably need to assign different IP addresses and the same subnet masks to the TCP/IP properties of each computer: Computer 1 could be IP 192.168.0.1 & subnet 255.255.255.0, and Computer 2 could be IP 192.168.0.2 & subnet 255.255.255.0. You might also need to type in the same Workgroup Name in the Identification tab.

Good news, you are half way there.

Windows 98 Machine: RIght Click on Network Neighborhood and choose properties. It's been a while so I forget precisely where everything is so forgive me. You need to look around the tabs. Make sure Printer and File Sharing is installed and enabled. In the Network Logon box choose Windows Logon. In another tab choose a workgroup name. Remember this it MUST be the same on both machines. Click on OK and the computer will demand a reboot. Let it happen. When it is rebooted, right click on any folder and now look for the sharing option. Share the folder.

On the WinXP machine: Right Click on My Computer and select properties. Look in teh computer name tab. Enter the same workgroup that you had before. (Computer name must be different to the win98 box) Click on OK and if necessary reboot. Once rebooted right click on a folder and select sharing. If you have to - just click on enable file sharing - simple file sharing - and "just enable file sharing" it gets a little fussy at times.

Now on the windows 98 machine click on network neighborhod and you should see the shared folder on the xp machine. Similarly click on my computer on xp - network - Microsoft Windows Network - Whatever the name of your work group is and you should see the win98 machine.

You can right click on a printer and share that too!

Hpe this helps

They must first both be on the same workgroup, they then must have file and print sharing enabled.
