I think they are treated poorly for a few reasons.
1) There are too many absolutely stupid questions by Americans on here from juveniles about sex, bodily functions, etc so they might think we are all idiots.
2) American tourists can be rude and arrogant, openly showing their disdain for other cultures and peoples.
3) The current US administration has done a fabulous job of destroying what little goodwill is left in the world, thanks to more failed foreign policy attempts, bullying and violence in the Middle East.
4) People could be jealous of our level of material wealth and freedoms, but those who hate freedom usually don't understand it.
5) Our own news media, movies and TV programs make us look like stupid idiots.

I am from the United States which is in the central part of the continent of North America. I don't know what you call free but I pretty much do as I please. I could go about anywhere I wanted to. No one is stoping me. My home is new and build a year ago and I have a very well paying job. My girl freind is from Thailand and I bought my truck new and she bought her car new which both are paied off and we each have money in the bank and in our retirment accounts. We are both in good health and we have all the nice things we want in life. Maybe that is why people don't like us, I have never went to any other country and killed anyone, Everyone keeps confusing the People of the USA with George Bush. I am not George Bush and I did not vote for him. It was a lot of stupid people. But most will not admit it now.
As far as being treated poorly on Yahoo who cares. I can defend myself.

Americans are high profile targets and the internet is a good place to be targeted...
I have no figures to backup this theory but.... I would have to say that (per capita) the United States probably has more computers in individual households connected to the internet than any other country in the world. With more computers comes more immature people (young and old) on those computers. Give a immature individual a connection to the internet and give them the ability to communicate and guess what is going to happen. Most of them have no concept of how the behavior they display can negatively influence people of other countries/cultures against them and they don't care because they are safely tucked behind a monitor.
Acting immature breeds immaturity... let me redirect you up to Foo's answer above... case in point

Americas not free, you have the tightest security controls I've ever seen.
Now Mongolia, that's a free country.
Or the UK.
But America free?, Hah, that's just what your leaders tell you to shut you up.
