I actually heard him tell this story when he was a guest on MSG, when it was a Yankee station. He became a Met fan so that he could rebel against his father, which is how the Mets got a lot of their fans during the 60s. He said that all he heard growing up was "Mickey Mantle". He went to a Mets game, went straight to his father, and said "The name is TOMMIE AGEE!", who was the Mets' centerfielder at the time. So his becoming a Mets fan was partly because he wanted to follow something new, but also to get under his father's skin.

A lot of people became Mets fans around the time Agee was CF for the Mets because at that point the Mets were becoming good and in 69 of course actually won the World Series whereas the Yanks were at one of their lowest points ever. I grew up on Long Island and everyone was a Met fan.
