The left loves to tell us that the Founding Father were not Christians, they were the very foundation of the modern democratic party, open minded liberals they tell us...to suggest other wise will send them into a level 5 panty-wad with neck veins popping like a well worn garden hose....

right?

until we speak of legal slavery of that era...

then the context changes.......

suddenly they put these law makers, these founding fathers through an evolution that would make Charlie Darwin cringe!!!! NOW...they are right-wing Neo-Republican Christians who enslaved the Africans...even the liberal hero Thomas Jefferson (owner of over 100 slaves) is quickly abandoned...no father of theirs they say!

ever notice?

Yes, I've noticed.

Also, Thomas Jefferson is the hero of Separation of Church and State but it was during his administration that the Bible was made a standard school textbook.

What's the big deal? Why can't people acknowledge our heritage?

The key thing to know about the founders of our country is that they distrusted the power of the State --- after all, they were all subjects of a King. They hated Absolutism, and believed that human individuals were the key building blocks of a productive society.

Modern American leftists believe that all rights are derived from the State, and that individuals must conform to the "common good" and that the only fair society is a collectivist one.

In other words, Marxist doctrine is at odds with the original "liberal" concept of individual rights. Therefore, it's proper for the Vanguard of the Proletariat to trash the evil white founders every chance they get...

So, Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. It was legal to do so at the time. George Washington grew marijuana. It was legal to do so at the time.

You make 2 points that are entirely unrelated. They felt that freedom of religion was important enough to make it #1 on the Bill of Rights. The abolition of slavery wasn't added to the Bill of Rights until #13, about 80 years after the Bill of Rights was written.

Using the dictionary definition of "liberal", our founding fathers were extremely liberal, even if they did things that modern liberals abhor.

I subscribe to Jeffersonian principles - separation of church and state, limiting powers of government, etc. - even though I don't agree with everything he did in his private life. I'm sure that modern day Bush supporters don't approve of everything he's done (alcoholism, drug use, etc.) in his private life, either.

Ummmm...some DID own slaves, and many DID argue against forms of religious attitudes still common today, and some weren't Christian.

There's no contradiction here. It's just that history is a complicated story, not a simple political parable.

I hear you, but here's my question: why does the party of 'fiscal responsibility' and small government rack up more debt than anyone has ever seen? And champion huge gains in executive control over the states?

Haha! Counterpoint!
