As a previous answer indicated by your answer you have to ask yourself what you really want to do. What would make you most excited if you watched people enjoying your game? Who it be the fact you designed the game or created the technology behind it?

As a game developer for over 14 yrs. I can tell you programming can be extremely enjoyable if your "in to it" however it can be a great stress as well. You have to really want to be a programmer to be the most productive.

Now that I have said that here is my advice....

For Designers:

If you want to be a game designer and dont have family or friends knowledgable in programming/art then you will have to learn some script type programming. There are many commerical grade game engines available for free or less than 100 bucks.

Find one and start reading, then read some more.

For Programmers:

If you would like to program you really need to start at the basics and that is C/C++, Microsoft offers Visual Studio 2005 Express as a free download. Once you have picked you that you need to dive into DirectX or a 2D/3D library which you can find on the internet.

As with designers you can also download/purchase a commercial grade engine however, you need to know how these engines work to truely be a game programmer. Using code and/or engines made by someone else all the time wont help you when there is a bug or design change.

If you ever work for a game company and the boss comes in and says "I got an idea can we add ?" or "How come the game always locks up on this level?" what will you say if you don't understand how the entire system works?

By the way you worded your question, it would seem that you are not too familiar with programming, so i take it you want some sort of scripting engine. That being the case, it sounds like you really want to design the game and play it, more so than actually laboring to do it (a typical programmer loves to program and is happy to leave the design to someone else)

That being the case you could do a joint venture with someone who is on the programming side.

I am not too famliar with rpg makers but you could always check out www.allegro.cc and find example source codes of programmers that have done RPG's. Looking at the source may give you some idea of how it was done, and if you are lucky, will have a custom scripting engine included.

i don't be attentive to what utility they used, besides the fact that it is not correct. there are various surprising activity progression applications in recent times. one that i've got been seeing used lots recently is team spirit. there is likewise activity Maker. the two help coding your guy or woman stuff as properly to straightforward 'drag-and-drop' from a library of premade stuff, and allow you to make 2d or 3-d video games.
