Our entire back yard is covered in a variety of different types of mushrooms. I am afraid our dog will eat one. She is an inside dog but when she goes out to potty she finds things on the groud and puts things in her mouth. We have NEVER even had one mushroom back there and now........ covered. We can't figure it out.

Because mushrooms are merely the fruiting bodies of fungi, removing them does not kill the underground mycelia from which they are growing. Picking mushrooms, puffballs, stinkhorns, or other reproductive structures soon after they appear may prevent their spores from spreading to new sites. HOWEVER, because most spores are wind-blown long distances, they can easily come into a lawn from neighboring areas.

This is usually caused by a lot of moisture and usually there is some old rotten tree roots under the surface of the ground or a lot of mulch, or heavy dead grass , leaves or anything covering the ground , keeping it moist, thus a perfect place for mushrooms, a fungus, to grow. You have to remove the roots or cover to air out the soil, and also remove the mushrooms by hand as soon as they come up and they aren,t edible.
