For me, finding a penny on the street, in a store, anywhere you're NOT expecting to find one is a "sign" that good luck and happiness is coming my way. It feels good to imagine that you're loved ones who have passed away are showing their love and support for you by randomly putting pennies in your path. A lot of people view this as a good luck charm, and it is sometimes referred to as "pennies from heaven."
Some people still like the old favorite charms of a rabbit foot or four-leaf clover, though.
