Acoustics, unlike classical guitar requires you to be a good listener and strummer. You won't be playing note-by-note, but more towards chords (eg. C...G7...F...G...C, something like that). Like for example, "Last Kiss" by Pearl Jam has a very good practising set of chords.Only these chords are involved:
G, Em, C, D.

(Anyway, I'm a Grade 9 or "Year 2" Guitar Student for Classical Guitar, and Acoustics is part of my Guitar syllabus)

The basics are:
1)An acoustic guitar
2)Fingers
3)A musical ear
That's how I started. Would have done a bit better with some lessons, but I figured out how to play a few things.

Learn the basic chords from a chord chart.
Learn the pentatonic minor scale.

GETTING an acoustic guitar.
