I'm the same age as you, and I think a good idea for a coustom is an hero of a popular movie or something. Think about some movies that have recently come out, pick up a hero (maybe the most funny, popular or beautiful) and try to look like him. For example, in my country there was a popular TV series this year and a lot of girls chose to look like an actress whose hair is fair and too curly. This coustom was sooo trendy!!!

Pirates are really popular right now. I also think that V from V for Vendetta is an awesome idea. The more people who do it, the more awesome the effect will be.
Last year I was Hermione from Harry Potter. It was tons of fun and people recognized it.
