I think hands down Zakk Wylde takes the competition away. He is full of soul (especially his Pride and Glory days) and in everyone of his songs is a unique solo!!! He shreds like like a madman and is the definition of "blues metal".

Zakk Wylde is one of my favs too, but straight rock guitarists I'd say Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Angus Young, Steve Vai, and I also really like Tom Morello (from Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave). Oh yeah, and Randy Rhoads!

Michael Angelo was the fastest I"ve ever heard.
Randy Rhodes was the best early metal guitarist
Dimebag was the greatest modern metal guitarist
It's hard to judge who is the best ALIVE- maybe Yngwie
Easier to rate after they die- unfortunately.

The greatest that ever walked the planet was Hendrix.
The strings were an extension of his conscience. Nobody else has ever had that.- even Dimebag would've admitted that.

for me, shredding doesn't equal greatness. my tastes are a little more old school...

ritchie blackmore of deep purple/rainbow/blackmore's night
adrian smith, dave murray and janick gers of iron maiden
tony iommi of black sabbath
hank shermann of mercyful fate/force of evil
tom morello of rage against the machine/audislave. most unique guitarist in a long time!

too many others to mention.
