I was once driving through southern Minnesota in a blinding snowstorm, going way too fast for my own good, but trying to get home at a decent hour. The wind had turned the highway into miles of sheet ice, but my little Nissan seemed to be holding on just fine.

I passed a couple teenage boys in a pickup truck, and remembered how those kinds of guys were in my hometown -- basically seed-cap wearing rednecks with bad grades and bad attitudes. I kept on driving.

A gust of wind suddenly made my car rotate at a 90-degree angle, and I watched the snowy landscape go past my windshield at about 70 mph. I worked to correct the angle of my car, but then it shifted all too far and I zipped off the road into a ditch. WHAMMO! It was an explosion of ice and snow. And I was stuck.

I tried to reverse the car, spin it this way and that, and worried that I'd be stuck there all night. The highway patrol would find my frozen corpse huddled in the back seat. REALLY happy image, huh? Then, I see headlights from behind me, and it's those two teenage boys in their pickup. They saw me spiral and crash, and asked if I was okay. Moments later, they both pushed my car out of the ditch, allowing me to maneuver back on the highway. I thanked them profusely, and privately apologized to them for making gross assumptions on their character.

I see it on this service all the time (not all the people or all the posts, but frequently).

People who, out of the goodness of their hearts, read questions, try to understand what they are asking, and write thoughtful, helpful responses to people they will never meet. Just to give them the answers or advice they seek; to help them out a little bit, sometimes a lot, with knowledge, insight, support, words of kindness, words of sanity.

And with that, I log off for the night.

It's been awhile. Last weekend a friend of mine found a stray cat and sheltered it from Ernesto. She cared for it, fed it, and now she's adopted it. It's a sweet cat too....
