There are so many religions because people don't know where to find the truth. They use their own knowledge to determine what path they should follow.

I believe that the first religion to exist, was The Church of Jesus Christ of Early-Day Saints.

Animism, the belief that there is a spirit in all objects, was probably the first religion.

There are so many religions because people can't agree on any large body of beliefs. The more details in a religion, the more chances are that some people will say, "We agree on tenets 1-48, 50-63, 66-92, but 49 is wrong, we doubt 64 and 65, and 93-100 don't apply to us, so we're going to form a new religion."

There are also so many religions because people in general want answers to hard questions and will take some kind of answer over no answer at all. This means that instead of saying that since "THE" religion's tenets 49, 64, 65 and 93-100 make no sense, they choose no religion, they choose a modified religion.

There are also so many religions because people who believe strongly in their religion - all tenets 1-100, for example - reject those who believe almost all. The rejection casts those "non-believers" out into the Void, but those outcasts still want a religion and will create one.

There are also so many religions because people have different needs, and religions (perhaps capital R Religions) provide both the spiritual answers that their adherents want and a supportive social organization that fills daily needs.

My response is hardly exhaustive, of course. There are so many religions because as long as there are individuals, there will be individual expectations and requirements; the more people there are, the more religions there will be.

People find different ways to explain different things, based on their culture and ancestors. The first religion is Hinduism; animism is more widely considered a philosophy rather than a religion, explaining certain natural occurrences. The oldest modern day religion is Hinduism.
