do you feel irritated when people slow down their cars to see small car accident on the other side of the hihgway? these people are so stupid, they are just looking, not helping. once they are slow, the other cars behind will have to be slower and the next cars will have to stop.

why people are so stupid.

Oooo, your post named the #1 thing I hate about driving - and I love to drive.

For the life of me, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND why alot of drivers feel they need to sllllloooooow down and look at a freeway accident. Usually, assistance personnel have already responded to the accident, so they certainly don't need our help. And, the great majority of us have already seen accidents, regardless of whether the vehicles involved are still blocking the highway/freeway, or the vehicles have already been moved to the shoulder.

I'm not saying we should all just blow past the accident scene doing 80, (we'd be issued a citation anyway), but it is NOT necessary to slow down to a crawl and drive past the scene at 30 mph!

I read somewhere that, on a fairly congested freeway where traffic is slow but moving steadily, ONE DRIVER who repeatedly brakes unnecessarily can cause that same traffic to come to a standstill. When you multiply that by the hundreds and hundreds of drivers who feel the need to drop their speed and brake while passing an accident scene, it's no wonder that the traffic can and often does back up for miles.

One of the reasons that traffic gets backed up is one of my personal pet peeves.

18-wheelers sticking in the left-hand lane, trying to pass at a glorious 110 kilometers an hour when the cruising speed is 120+.

Cars can get backed up for kilometers that way.

Also, left lane hangers, construction, poorly designed on/off ramps (those weaving lanes are murder traps), time of day (rush hour or sun in eyes). But the really big one here in Eastern Ontario, especially in the winter, is weather.

It's not that people are stupid .... its curiosity ...traffic studies have shown that tailgating and weaving between cars causes traffic jams also...

They're not stupid, they're hypnotized. They do not consciously control their attention, they respond automatically in their dream state.
