Why do the singers scream!! I think the music is great but I can't stand the screaming. What, they can't sing for some reason. Then why the hell are they in a rock band with talented musicians.

I love the band Death, Chuck Schuldiner's (RIP) screams and screeches were awesome while still understandable. He wrote some great lyrics and was awesome on guitar. Death and black metal bands with lyrics you can't understand I don't listen to very often, gotta be in the right mood. But, as other people have answered, that's what death metal is, it's a part of the atmosphere the music has and provides. Dark, demonic, death.

The purpose of the screaming in death metal is exactly why it's labeled as a music genre. It's to create an illusionary fear, and what's more scary than having a tatted, pierced monster screaming? Yeah, I see your point though...great music, no good singers. I love Children of Bodom and Lamb of God, but I can't stand the screaming.

I don't constantly listen to death metal, but I do listen to some bands. The voice is like a primative guttural anger that you can feel regardless of recognizing the lyrics. Alot of times I dont recognize what they say without looking at lyrics but when I listen to it I want to headbang and go crazy. It's a feeling. I'll admit, some of the stuff is a little out there for me (anything that has to do with kids for example), but sometimes the music speaks to me and what I feel at the time. Also, those vocalists are talented and have something to say. I tried to growl and my throat hurt in less than a minute, if that isn't talent, I don't know what is!

A proper death growl requires as much talent as singing. It's a very specialized, genre-specific style. It's very much an acquired taste. But, if you just don't like it, check out a band called "The Sword." Very awesome, non-screaming, old-school metal.

I listen to alot of old school death metal and I think the vocals work with the energy of the music. go to some shows, I don't think you really appreciate the music if you think they're talentless. I'd be interested to see what bands you're referring to.

The reason they scream like that in a gutteral voice is that they are mimicking what they think demons sounds like..that is the truth for real!

the way the songs are written...with much anger and fear...and the screaming helps to "produce that" anger. hey...one of the heaviest bands ever (slayer) doesnt really scream!

I like "regular" screaming, like the guy in Slayer, but not that "throat" screaming like the guy in Testament does a lot. It just sounds stupid.
