I've recently found a fun pattern for fingerless mittens. They were fun to knit and didn't take long at all. Christmas is coming, after all. Get a head start on your gifts. Slippers are also fun to knit and don't take a whale of a lot of time.
My favorite technique for making slippers or the fingerless mittens extra warm is to run two yarns at once. One's a fluffy or fuzzy yarn and the other's a plain old simple yarn. Get coordinating colors. If you like Red Heart (my favorite brand, the only brand with which I've had no surprises) try one skein of Light & Lofty and one skein of Super Saver. They often come in the same colors. Hold the two yarns together and treat them as one.
Once you've decided on a project or two, go to Google and search for free patterns. I've found some really good ones.

If you just have the urge to knit and don't have the patience for a blanket, why not knit 8" square in different colors and patterns? After a while you'll have enough to stitch together into a sampler blanket. Otherwise, knit up a bunch of tiny knit caps and donate to a hospital maternity ward ( they'll love it! ) or child size caps and donate to the local fire department or child welfare department.

Well, we ARE coming up on the winter season...how about a nice sweater for yourself? Somewhat more challenging than a scarf and will work up much quicker than an afghan. In fact, if I were to want a new afghan I would crochet it instead of knit.
There are so many patterns out there and so many cool yarns and colors, the choices are practically endless. Not to mention the fact that you can wear something that you handmade for yourself. The compliments can be amazing!

A red hat like Kirstin Dunst wears in Elizabethtown. Love it.
But also, check out craftster.org and go to the forums, if you haven't already. There are sections for almost everything, but anyway, people have a lot of pretty good ideas on there. It's super addictive though.

you could knit some small jumpers for sick penguins on Phillip island Australia. The carers are always eager for new jumpers to keep them warm

What about a lap blanket... not full size blanket, just nice for covering while watching tv.

I just wish I could knit. I have coworkers that are having babies or grandbabies and I am tired of crocheting all the time.
