i think it means that a man that has no knowledge of his past can not continue to grow in a wise and healthy way.the absence of family history or loved ones is a long and empty path to walk.

ok so a tree without roots is useless. so a man without history is useless because its like a person not knowing anything. and if you dont know anything, then you'd get tricked, decieved, etc by other people. so basically, you need to learn about history so u can learn from other countrie's, people's, etc. mistakes and nt do the same as they did.

I think that it means that without history you have nothing to anchor you to life. Much like a tree can not survive without a root system to provide it with food and water, man can not survive with out history to provide him with example of adequate and inadequate decision making. After all, we are the sum total of all of the decision that we have made and without examples of how to make those decisions, we are doomed to die whether it be physical, mental, political, spiritual, financial, or social death.
