Let's see, how do I put this....I have a company with a Tax ID number and a business name. I'm thinking of purchasing a small business and want to add the name onto my original business with the TAX ID? Is this possible...I know many people have larger companies as "umbrellas..." I hope this makes sense...

I think I understand your question. You didn't mention if you're incorporated or not. I'm assuming that you are. If you haven't already filed your tax return, you can change the name on page one of the Form 1120. If you have already filed, you need to send a written notification of the name change to the IRS, along with the amendment to the Articles of Incorporation from your state that shows the state has legally accepted the name change. Actually, the big problem will probably be with your state. Here in Illinois, you need to file a ream of paper to accomplish the simplest of tasks.

Check www.irs.gov under "business name change" if you need a few more details.
