Save means saving the actual document (if it's the first time you save it, it will ask you where you want to save it, and the name of the file. The next times it will only save). The "save as" option, means that you can save that file and change it's location, name, file type (it will open a window asking you the name, like the first time you click "save")
So, for just saving a document, click "save", for changing anything about the file type, name, location, etc, click "save as".

When you save a file you created for the first time, it will automatically go to save as. This will allow you to choose a location to save it (Desk top, C drive etc.), choose a name for the file and a file type if you want.
When you save after that, the computer will automatically do it the same as last time.
If you are looking at a document you want to modify or move or change the file type of you have to use save as to get those options. Otherwise the file will only go back to where you got it.

If you have not previously saved the document, then SAVE and SAVE AS commands are exactly the same as both will create a new document on your harddrive.
If you have previously saved the document, or had opened a previously saved document, then SAVE command will replace the saved document on the harddrive with the current version.
SAVE AS command, on the other hand, will give you a choice between replacing the document on the harddrive or saving it under a new name. You should use SAVE AS if you did not want the original document replaced with the new one.
