What your parents told you was true, they are black. I know this because I witness open thoracotomy procedures, and you can tell who smokes and who doesn't.

I went to Bodyworld at the MN science museum where they display many dissected bodies. As part of the display they had several examples of lungs from smokers, and they pointed out the large lesions that was the lung cancer that killed them. Other than that the lungs were blackened with years of tar.

The lungs look as bad as you might imagine. They are much less elastic and are generally discolored to either a rich brown or black color. Plenty of reason to not smoke or stop if you currently do.

i don't have pics but they are black and can get as brittle as chips if you smoke for many years resulting in emphysema
