You could try a music theme. You said for last year some of the backgrounds had words like "KAPOW" "BAM" etc.; if you did a music theme you could have lyrics. Ask everyone who their favorite musical artist are.

When I was the editor of my school yearbook, in ancient times, we used the theme of the seasons. Everything was tied into Spring, Summer, Fall, winter. Spring began with the freshman just starting out and all the Spring activitites. The Seniors were Winter as they were the oldest and ready to leave and be reborn. Winter activites, etc were under this category. Anyhow, you get the gist of the theme. Everyone loved it.l

How about Hollywood. You could place each photo inside of a 35MM film strip, as if the persons picture was what is exposed inside that segment of film. And you could use spotlights throughtout the book as if it was an opening night. you oculd also use the same font used in the movie posters, for example the Star Wars type is very recognizable, as is the Indiana Jones one, to headline certain areas of the yearbook.

Haunted by the future, you can as people things like whats thier scariest experience, or what was thier best costume, things like that

Or you can do storybook maybe. and have some childrens storybook picutures. Maybe name the yearbook "Once upon a time"

Or like a newspaper theme, where all the pictures are late breakign stories and such.

Reality tv.
Make a list of all of the reality shows on television.

Assign each group (clubs, grades, etc.) into one of those shows.

Or, for each of those groups, create a new reality show about them.

Think outside the box.
Accept the help from anyone in school who expresses an interest.

well, you found the best way to waist your time. no one cares about the year book and in a year, you'll look back and say "what the hell was i thinking".

How about students with... thought-bubbles over their heads. Perhaps a few... funny thoughts they have about teachers, or certain situations.
