Depends when they are young they should have simple phones that they can use in the case of emergencies. Now if you are talking about a cell phone for them to use in non-emergency situations...probably about 14. Even then it should be superivised use... they really don't need them until they have a job that can pay for the bill!

I am 14. I got my first cell phone at age 11. I don't know if you would consider me old enough to answer this, but in my oppinion it's more about their maturity level. You could be 10 and be more worthy of a cell phone than a 17 year old. There is a point where you are too young. For example, I know a little girl who is SEVEN and has a mobile. Absurd I think. As far as paying for it themselves, I don't think it's really something that they should have to cover as long as they use it within reason, not getting on the Internet and sending 50 text messages a day. My phone generally runs about $15 a month.

15 maybe, sadly, it would depend if it's for a boy or a girl. Girls tend to talk more and would more then likely run up your cellphone bill and will be costly, where as boys won't talk for hours upon hrs.

Dont' go off an age though, go off of how mature the kid is, if they earn/deserve it.

You can get the pay-as-you go phones for younger kids that will only use it in emergencies. I think cell phones are VERY important. Not just to chat on, but if your kid is in sports and needs to call home for something, if they didn't have one, they'd be stranded. If they're out with friends, at they're at the mall, whatever, they need to have one. And it will be comforting knowing that you can reach them at all times if needed. So I'm thinking maybe at the age of 13- whenever they're at the age of being able to walk around places by themselves, or when they're staying after school for school functions and sports and such.

My kids were able to get their own cell phone when they could afford to pay the monthly fee. A family cell phone is fine and a great thing to have for all, but kids use cell phones for more than just keeping in touch with mom and dad. Texting costs can get ridiculous (which we have found out - 978 texts in one month!). Phones are used by kids as a social tool, and, both my husband and I allowed our kids to have their own phones when they were responsible enough to be able to work and pay for it themselves. We have never regretted this decision.

Whenever they can pay for their own bill. Even if it means paying for it with their allowance, babysitting money, etc..

I work in a junior high school and I would say that 90% of my students own cell phones. Many of them from what I hear go over their minutes and simply overuse them. They have no concept of paying for the bill themselves, therefore they use their phones like crazy. I agree that some students need to have them for emergencies, but believe me it is a very small number of students who actually use them for emergencies only.
