I heard they were the worst things ever, but a really old mechanic had one in a chevette and swore it was indestructable( it's hard to imagine the words "indestructable" and "chevette" in the same sentence)

i had a chevette once and it ran and ran and run it died because a tree fell on it. 300,000 plus miles.
it was driven for 20 miles with no oil in it in its first 100k
I think that had alot to do with the high tec oil I was running in it.

The diesel Chevette had an Isuzu engine. There were some other GM diesels in the late '70s and early '80s that used engines based on the Oldsmobile gasoline powered V8. Those particular diesels were absolute disasters.

The diesel you are describing ism the infamous 5.7 liter. It was based off the International 4.8 in the tractors and was actually a 350 block and the modified heads. Had 21:1 compression and rail distribution for the fuel management system. It was the start of what was to become. 5.7, 6.2, 6.5 turbo, 7.1 turbo etc.

As for the Chevette like the Vegas and the Opels they were built with weigh to HP and no frills added so less to go wrong. Simplicity at it's best.

I wish they made them again. I think they would sell this time.
Diesels have come a long way on improvements in the past 20 years, quieter, more reliable. Isuzu is one of the best in diesels.

He's correct. They actually had an Isuzu diesel engine in it. I test drove one back then, and it ran really well. But, for some reason you couldn't get AC on it.
