I'm not sure what is causing the smell. It is not from an animal. I wonder if it is mildew under the carpet? I just shampooed the carpets a few days ago, but the smell is still here. Any suggestions?

Fabreeze doesn't help. Any recomendations for a really good carpet shampooer would be appreciated.

It's probably "something" in the padding. It seems like when a carpet is shampooed the stuff in the padding rises up as the carpet dries. For example, when you are shampooing you think you got a stain out and then when the carpet is drying it comes back up. I'd say shampoo again and find a cleaner that says it kills odors--maybe one for pet odors and stains, even if you don't think the smell is from a pet. Don't wet the carpet too much and go back and forth over it a lot to extract all the moisture. Use fans, ceiling or others, to help with the drying. Good luck.

It sounds like you have a problem with mildew. You need to take care of the humidity problem as well as the mildew problem. Any mold can be a health problem. If you have mildew in the carpet it is unlikely that you can get it out, even with professional cleaning. It is most likely in the pad underneath for sure.

You have to do the big cleaning job. You really need to rip out anything that has mold or mildew in it, kill the mold and mildew (living organisms), take care of the moisture, and dry everything completely. There is no easy fix to the problem. A dehumidifier may be part of the solution.

When my kids were little they spilled Kool Aid on a new carpet. We couldn't get the stain out so we cut out the piece of carpet and fitted a new piece in - we had pieces of carpet left over - is that a possibility if it is just a section of carpet that is a problem?

Here are a number of sites that should help you. Best of luck with getting this problem sorted.

Remove the carpet. This is what we will have to do when our 15 year old dog passes on. Our carpet has been down for at least 16 years with so much stains, spills, waste, foot steps and etc., that we have not been able to get the stains out and now the odor is growing stronger. But the only way to remove the odor is to remove the carpet and let the floor boards breathe.

IT MIGHT BE THAT IN THE PAST SOMEONE SHAMPOOED THE CARPET AND REALLY SOAKED IT.....IN THE TIME IT TAKES TO DRY OUT THAT KIND OF MOISTURE....IT MOLDS AND A BACTERIA FORMS....ITS NOT PLEASANT AT ALL.....THE BEST IVE FOUND TO DO IS TO RE SHAMPOO WITH A STEAMER FILLED WITH VERY HOT WATER A TEASPON OF CLOROX IN THE FULL CONTAINER AND A HIGH QUALITY SHAMPOO THAT INDICATES IT KILLS BACTERIA.....AFTER IT DRIES...SPRAY DIRECTLY ON THE CARPET ZEROODOR FROM ZEROODOR.COM....ITS MAINLY FOR DOG OR CAT ODORS BUT ALSO WORKS ON DIFFICULT CLOSET ODORS AND ALL THE OTHERS.....IN THE FUTURE, WHEN YOU REPLACE THE CARPET ....REPLACE THE UNDERPADDING COMPLETELY....HOPE IT HELPS.

if it's in a certain spot then just put a fan facing the area, and keep it on the spot for 2 days to let it dry!!!! if it's the whole carpet, then put a whole lot of fans around.. thats happen to me before, and we just put fans on the spots, to let dry!! if that does not work, call a carpet cleaning place, i just got my carpets clean for only 114.00 for almost the whole house.. but it is mold that is causes it to smell, but if you dry it in time, it will go away!!!!

Replace it and the padding too. Wash the floor underneath with a bleach solution.
