Much of what you can read on this subject is open to interpretation. My opinion is as follows.

Britain had not invaded the US, nor for that matter declared war... the colonials considered themselves British prior to their declaring independence. For that matter, many wanted to remain British, they just wanted rid of some pretty oppressive taxes and a political voice.

Also, France did not attempt to invade England in order to drive out the oppressive regime. In the great war, battles were staged over many nations. While France was involved, military action was pretty much limited to the rebelling British colonies. Their intent was more harrasment of Britain rather than out-and-out war.

Other than Britain and France, the other "world powers" of the time seem to have played no major role.

Good point...
The American Revolution in the 1770s could also be concidered WW1, as it involved the British, the american colonists (though Brit subects at the time) at the French...

Because the Idea that it was the american revolution is more important.
