I just switched to australia with the flags at the bottom of the page, i thought it was gone but then i got on the news and they were showing how this lawyer was trying to save his client from it...sheesh harsh

I think you might've misread the discussion a little bit. The death penalty is no longer legally recorded on the statutes of Australia, or any current Commonwealth country, so firing squads are out of the question.

I think the people you are refering to, who are facing the firing squad is a group of Australian's arrested in Indonesia (in the Bali province) for drug smuggling. The death penalty is applied in Indonesia for drug smuggling.

The last use of the death penalty in Australia was in Victoria in 1967. Ronald Joseph Ryan was hanged at Pentridge Prison at 8:00 AM on February 3, 1967 for the murder of a prison guard, George Hodson.

Capital punishment was officially abolished throughout Australia by the Death Penalty Abolition Act 1973.

As an Aussie i can tell you that no it is not a form of punishment it doesnt happen at all unless people are heartless bastard and kill someone for the fun of it but no.
