for me to accept that no matter how hard I try at something, somebody with talent would always be able to beat me out.

talent by definition is innate. it's natural skill. but to be especially good at something, someone with talent has to develop it through hard work. a talent can go to waste without practice.

somebody with talent will not necessarily be better than you. if you practice as much as they do, you can become as good as they are. and if they practice less than you do, despite their natural skill, you can become better. It all depends on whether or not they nurture their skills, and on which of your own skills you develop.

well, most people are not willing to work extremely hard and that includes most people with talent

somebody without great talent can still be better than many people with innate, undeveloped abilities

however, somebody that is genetically gifted (body or mind) that is willing to work as hard as you, will be better than you, this is reality, don't let it bother you

no matter how hard I worked at it, in the prime of my life, I would have been a mediocre sprinter (wrong body type, wrong muscle distribution, no talent) but I became a decent (not great) distance runner

and I'm a helluva engineer

its okay, enjoy what you are good at
work at what you like
its fun
its rewarding
who cares what other people are doing, go with it

It really depends on what you are trying to do. For example, if you don't study in college you won't do well no matter how smart you are.
