we have stuff to talk about and have known each other for 3 years, just now we started going out. we seem to be into each other and have things in common. at the same time we have many differences: could this be the case of opposites attract?
what could their relationship be like? are they good together?

It's very questionable. And it depends on the entire natal chart, particularly your moons and your ascendants. As it stands, once you guys get past the initial attraction, Sagittarius will be too flirty, active, energetic and restless for the Virgo. And the Virgo will be too picky, finicky, worried and nervous for the Sagitarrius. Sag loves freedom and activity. Virgo needs security and predicatbility. If we're only going by sun signs you have some challenges.
On the other hand, let's say the sun in Virgo guy has his moon in Sag or Leo or Aries (fire signs). And if she has her sun in Sag but her moon in Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn. Now that's a dynamite match. Those two could have a passionate, empathetic compatibility that would make for an excellent relationship.
The key is that you need to do your research.
Do a natal chart on both of you and see if your suns and moons have "trine" compatibility. The same goes for your ascendant. If there's trine compatibility between any of those three major bodies then that means there's good compatibility. There are websites that can help such as astrology.com. But I suggest you buy a few books on the subject. One is titled: "The only astrology book you'll ever need." I've found its charting to be the best. A lot of books have different charts so it takes a lot of trial and error to find one that is accurate. Sometimes a combination of books is needed. Another good book on compatibility would be "Heaven Knows What" or maybe try "Love Signs."
If you want to learn more about signs in relationships, buy the books and start studying. Even if you don't believe in astrology the books are great studies into human relationships and personality types.

I'm in a similar situation he's sag I'm a Virgo we have been together for 2 years. So far so good.
Also my best friend is a sag so i kind of get him a bit more.
The most important things is to embrace his creative side even if it doesn't always add up to you, when you do criticize be very gentle and if possible find facts to back it up that way it doesn't seem like you are the negative one
