The BIOS regulates and monitors important functions, such as the CPU speed and temperature, or the amount of RAM in your system.
Generally, the BIOS can be accessed by pressing F1 at startup.

BIOS means Basic Input/Output System. It gives your computer a Square One from which to start. If you get into it and screw it up, your computer won't know its assets from a hole in the ground. Don't touch it; let a tech at a shop do it. If they screw it up, they pay to fix it and they have to honor a repair for any problems you have that can be directly traced to having had the BIOS messed with. Just leave it alone!

(bī´ōs) Acronym for basic input/output system, the built-in software that determines what a computer can do without accessing programs from a disk. On PCs, the BIOS contains all the code required to control the keyboard, display screen, disk drives, serial communications, and a number of miscellaneous functions.

It is stored in your CMOS. It is the soft ware which runs the basics of your computer. The firmware and drivers take this further and run specific programs and hardware.
