The subjective terms First World, Second World, and Third World, can be used to divide the nations of Earth into three broad categories. Third World is a term first coined in 1952 by French demographer Alfred Sauvy to distinguish nations that aligned themselves with neither the West nor with the Soviet Bloc during the Cold War. Today, however, the term is frequently used to denote nations with a low UN Human Development Index (HDI), independent of their political status (meaning that the PRC, Russia and Cuba, all of which were very strongly aligned during the Cold War, are often termed third world). However, there is no objective definition of Third World or "Third World country" and the use of the term remains common. Some in academia see it as being out of date, colonialist, othering and inaccurate; its use has continued, however [1] In general, Third World countries are not as industrialized or technologically advanced as OECD countries, and therefore in academia, the more politically correct term to use is "developing nation".

This idea of first second and third world comes from the cold war.
After the war america and the u.s.s.r. were the two powers on the entire planet.
The first world, between united states and u.s..s..r
the second world was the industrialized states around the u.s.
Primarily those nations involved with WW2
britain, france, italy, germany, japan, over time the rest of europe entirely(soviet backed or u.s. backed). canada
The third world is the nations that were not the two superpowers(first world), and not the other nations involved with WW2(europe and japan).
So all of latin america, all of the carribbean, all of africa, all of asia excluding japan.Yes, china was third world too. Japan would have been third world because the marshall plan did not extend to japan. But, when china stabilized and korea started to go communist(before the korean war), the U.S. planned to do a marshall plan for japan.
And thats that.
Now the the third world countries are considered unindustrialized (for the most all the former third world excluding the emerging countries)or emerging(china, india, brazil).
