I'm 13 years old and a conservative. My question is: what's going in Iran? What's the big fuss? How are they dangerous? I know about most of the stuff in the news but I missed Iran somehow. Someone please clarify? Thanx

I am not conservative, but your question is a very good one, and a very complex one. Iran as we know it today was once the kingdom of Persia, Persian still being the primary language of most Iranians. For a long time it was considered the true jewel of the middle east; some of the most incredible writing and arts originate from this place. Hitler had a particular fascination with Persia because he believed that these people were the 'grandparents' of the true 'master race'.

Iran had been ruled by a royal family for many generations, which all fell during a coup in the 1970's, and brought in an islamic fundamentalist government. It brought about radical changes, supression of 'democracy' (although there never was a democracy in Iran) and stricter adherence to the Holy Book (qu'ran). There were great hostilities during the 70's and early 80's when the Iranian government allowed the US embassy employees to be taken hostage. This had been retribution because the US had allowed the deposed Shah (king) of Iran political assylum in the US to receive medical help. It was viewed by the Iranian government as hostile to their revolution.

During the Iran-Iraq war, we supported Saddam Hussein's Iraq. The US has generally thought about its interests when backing one side over another, which is about the same with any other country. Iraq's invasion of Kuwait was the begining of the hostilities between Iraq and the US.

In the mean time, for a brief few years in the 1990's, there was hope of increased good relations with Iran. This was due to a more friendly government open to US relations. This was rather quickly squashed, and relations returned to a very sour state.

Iran has been developing nuclear power (possibly weapons) for some time - this is a sticky area, because the US has changed it's support or lack of support of nuclear operations in different countries at different times for different reasons. For example, we support the development of nuclear power in India, but do not support it in Iran. Israel has nuclear weapons, and we support this. The general fear is that if Iran were to develop a nuclear weapon, it would completely throw the middle east out of balance, giving too much power to the Islamic government, and the ability to harm Israel.

The recent Lebanese war has only caused these tensions to grow more. The US backed Israel while Iran backed the Lebanese, so animosities back and forth seem to grow daily. It often has to do with perceptions. To many middle easterners, the west (particularly the US) is viewed as a colonialist and opportunistic country that presses its power all over the world, and they are also viewed as 'Godless' by some because it is not a country that is kind to Islam. The US often views Iran as a backward, religiously fanatical religious state that wants to provoke the west into a war.

Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions on both sides about the nature of the aggression toward each other. The US and Iran are alike in that they are both countries that are becoming increasingly conservative - ironically, 'conservative' in Islam describes the most religious factions of the government, which is the same in the US, so the mounting antagonisms is somewhat confusing. Many countries in the world, Iran being one of them, has become confused by the constant presense of US military troops in their part of the world, and feel that it is a threat. The US sees this as a kind of stability to prevent further war.

As you can see, it is a very complex situation that is hard to easily define.

Iran is lead by it's religious leaders... the President does nothing without their approval. They believe that they are on a mission from Allah. They want an Islamic State from China through Europe. They have stated as much. Iraq is to be the capital of this new Islamic state. After this State is in place, the rest of the world is to follow. The US (along with Israel) stands in the way of this plan. They hate us for many reasons, but mostly just because we aren't Muslim. And they hate other Muslims because they aren't Muslim enough. Ben Ladin, Alquida, and other terrorist organizations are loosely united in this effort. In the end only one of these groups will be in charge... until then they are all equeally our enemny. They have said so.

You are not conservative. You are 13 years old. You do not yet posses the mind for a complex issue like politics and therefore cannot make an informed decision. Let me guess, you live somewhere central America? right? or maybe Texas?

Lordy lord, they do start you off young, don t they...

Do you even know what a conservative or a Liberal is?

The leadership in Iran is extremely anti Western and anti Israel
and makes no bones about mouthing off about it. We believe
that he is pursuing Nuclear bomb capability and disguising his
endeaver by saying that they are enriching Uranium (can be
used for this purpose) only for peacefull energy purposes.
However, just like Iraq, they have a lot of oil and nobody believes
that his intentions are peacefull. By the way - Liberals are
frightened also even if they dont say so. Keep your eye on
what you think of issues and dont judge folks just because of
their particular party.

Iran may be a threat in the future, but right now, they're just like pre-war Iraq - they're rattling thier sabers...thats all they can do at this point. Im sure that the more conservative groups in the US would like to express how dangerous Iran is, but that would only be to further thier own political agendas. Iran is not threat at this point in time...

Iran is a rogue state that is rapidly developing capabilities to manufacture nuclear bombs. Their stated intention is to wipe Israel from the face of the earth. They provide financing and arms to terrorists world wide. They have refused to attend talks with other nations around the world aimed at getting them to stop their programs to produce nuclear weapons.

True, other nations have nuclear weapons, but they are a deterrent. Iran has shown every indication that they will use such a weapon if they manufacture one.

They are a danger to world safety and ruled by a madman.

The president claims to be enriching uranium for power purposes but the US, along with the UN, believe that Iran is making WMD's.
He also claims that his country and religion call for peace and love for one another but the next his next sentences calls for the destruction of Israel. Genocide is not a strong suite of someone who is sane.

You have asked for a conservative answer ie. one that will confirm a conservative point of view and therefore please someone who is conservative.

Clearly you do not want to find out what really is going on, just what you want to hear.

Well the only good thing is that at 13 you will not be able to vote for some years. No doubt when you are old enough you will waste your franchise on some silver haired, bible thumping, wood whittling, racist, ex drug addict, daughter bothering Republican millionaire. Thank god that time is a long way off.

Iran's leader is a lunatic. He has opened his reactors to enrich uranium. He has called for the destruction of Israel many times.

He said in a statement that he would risk losing half of Iran for the extinction of Israel.

Iran is building nuclear power plants with the ability to enrich uranium. With enriched uranium they will be able to build nuclear weapons.

You should not be editing the information you receive before you get it. Knowledge is power. Being able to see both sides of something will make you strong.

Being uninformed is not the way. Open your mind and you will empower yourself with the ability to think. Has nothing to do with being Conservative or Liberal.
