They can call but it is against HIPPA regulations for your doctors office to give information if you have not given the doctor written consent that they can talk to your employer. However many small offices do not follow this and assume it is OK. The best thing to do is explicitly express to your doctor's office not to disclose any information to anyone and make sure it is noted in their system and in your chart.

Yes, they can but if they do that is another story.

They can't get details because details violate the hippa.

Yes they can call to verify but they cannot ask what you saw the doctor for without your written permission to do so.
