Because the Democrats have not to been able to offer any viable alternative policies to solve the major problems of the day (problems that they clearly contributed to). So they are quite happy when a fictional movie makes the Republicans look bad, it's something they can point to as a difference. But when a fictional movie makes the Democrats look bad, well they don't like it because it makes them look like a mirror image of the Republican party with nothing different to offer in the way of policy. You are right, both parties are very similar, what would be really great would be for the Democrats to come up with some solutions, I'd vote for them.

Democrats are not in power now, they are not satisfied with the current state of affairs so they get excited and ask some rather pointy tough questions.
The Republicans are in power, they are happily stacking the deck in their favor in the executive, the legislative and the judicial branch of the government. They are doing their best to remove the checks and balances that make our from of government work.
Instead of answering or addressing the democrats questions and inquiries, they attack them either personally or question their patriotism.
This is rather alarming, as Hermann Goering used the same tactics about 60 years ago.
