is a common way of saying not very often, but what exactly is a Blue Moon?
According to the popular definition, it is the second Full Moon to occur in a single calendar month.

The average interval between Full Moons is about 29.5 days, whilst the length of an average month is roughly 30.5 days. This makes it very unlikely that any given month will contain two Full Moons, though it does sometimes happen.

On average, there will be 41 months that have two Full Moons in every century, so you could say that once in a Blue Moon actually means once every two-and-a-half years.

The lunar cycle is approximately 28 days long. So usually, we get a full moon every month. However, on the odd occasion, not very often, we get two full months in a month, one at the beginning of the month, the other at the end. The second full moon in the month is referred to as a "Blue Moon". Therefore, when something happens only rarely people say "it only happens once in a blue moon".

Yes. The moon takes 28 days to cycle and most of the time, we see one full moon per month. On rare occasions, we will have two full moons in a month and this is referred to as a "blue" moon. So "once in a blue moon" means this rarely ever happens.

A blue moon is when you have 2 full moons in the same month. How often does that happen? Usually only once in a blue moon.

A blue moon is a second full moon in a month or a third full moon in a single season. Since these don't happen very often, hence the expression.
