because it became more of an opera/theatrical show and the other members were more into rock. dennis deyoung (keyboards) was behind it. it was his baby.

Really that song signified the end of Styx as we knew it. They had became a viable art/progressive rock group with popularity. Most groups in that genre hadn't gained much commercial success. When the song and video came out the general public detested it, and Styx went into a major buying slump which they never recovered from.

Because it is the worst song ever written and they will be forever ridiculed for it. Also...because they have a fear that the robots will take over the planet and use Mr.Roboto as their anthem.
