I think any two people who go on a "date" are dating.

If they aren't dating, then they aren't going on dates. They're just hanging out. But if you were asking whether it was alright, sure it is. If neither of you have a problem with it, why would it be wrong?

Best friends go out together. The don't have dates.
Dating has a connotation of romance, love, etc.
Going out is just hanging out with friends/friend in public. Mutual interest, etc.
The one who asks for a date pays the cost for entertainment.
Going out is dutch. You always go out with friends. Who else would you go out with?

It is only complex when you have a jealous boy friend and you are trying to explain your guy friend to him.
