my funny story is this: a friend of mine came to my dorm kitchen last year w/ all these baking ingredients to make "hammeltaschen?" something like that. She was in a real hurry to make these for her grandmother before she left campus. I told her I had no idea what she was talking about & she said she assumed I had the recipe!! Not only that, she said she had thought the whole year of our friendship that I was Jewish (because of my name).

Yes, I had grown up in New York City but went to school in Missouri. Joined a fraternity which was made up mostly of Jewish guys from NY and CA. One day I was in the school's office & noticed my name on a list of students who didn't have to attend on Jewish Holidays.

My red-haired, blue-eyed, fair-skinned and freckled husband does (because he's pretty knowledgable about Judaism, so everyone assumes this nice Irish Catholic boy....)

He just tells them, "You know about the 10 Lost Tribes of Israel? They went out one day...and like most males, when they got lost, refused to ask for directions, and wound up in Ireland." He's even succeeded in convincing one naive soul that the harp on the flag (the "David's Harp"), was PROOF of this outrageous story.

I'm constantly mistaken for a gentile. People have actually told jewish jokes TO ME. They really crap down their leg when I tell them I'm jewish.

politician volunteer called and went on and on about how his candidate was sympathetic to the Nation of Israel...

I asked why they chose to call me, and they said because of my name. I asked what that had to do with an American of Welsh descent and wasn't too pleased to think that someone in that position would direct people to make that kind of assumption.
