Yes and no. It hurts, but it depends on how you can handle it mentally and how much control you have over you body. I will admit during the very worse contractions at the end before pushing you feel like you might die, but you know it will be over soon and it's all worth it because a baby will come of it. Just remember it will go faster if you can relax your whole body and breathe. It isn't really that bad right after the baby comes out, it's just amazing and you're in a daze. But then you have the afterpains of your uterus shrinking for the next few days, which I think is worse than anything else. And no matter how you deliver this will always be the same. Although not having the epideral for recovering the first couple days in the hospital was better than having the epideral...I think pain is worse when it comes on suddenly. Good luck!

This is my 5th pregnancy. One birth I had stadol (alot) and an epidural. Horrible experience. Just the epidural. And my last birth was a 9lb 6 oz baby with a 14 hours labor and I enjoyed all but about 20 minutes of it. I was super prepared. DONT TAKE LAMAZE. I have found that The Bradley Method is by far the best. YOu need a good birth partner whether a husband, mother or a doula. I even used a midwife for my last and it was great. The worst part of the pain comes from the fear and tensing up. If you can be confident and prepared and just give in to your labor its not that bad. Plus how many chances will you get to experience giving birth to your children. Ya pain is a part of it. But there are so many wonderful other things you will feel and experience!!

I had both of my children naturally; I used a whirlpool tub and walking for the first. I thought I was a big chicken, but I had a midwife who talked me out of an epidural by telling me I was doing great. I just figured anything is better than a needle in your back and if women used to do it all the time with no painkillers, I could do it too. The second I induced myself with castor oil and orange juice ( I drank it at 9:45 pm and he was born at 12:48 am). Three hours. I didn't even realize I was in labor. Our bodies were designed for this, and what great bragging rights! As long as there is no medical reason for any intervention, you really don't need it. Trust me, I used to be a chicken! You can do this. I think the baby is more alert if you go naturally, too... Good luck! You forget about it the second the head is out, anyway. Just my personal experience.

I had my child naturally with no drugs. I was a little scared of labor because my whole life my mom told me how horrible it was. To be honest, it wasn't the worst pain in the world. I hurt my knee at work the summer before my daughter was born and that was far worse. You get breaks in between the contractions. The worst part was when I was almost fully dilated and had the urge to push. My doctor wouldn't let me push until I was FULLY dilated. Pushing wasn't bad at all. I felt a mild burning sensation when she was coming out.

Not everyone feels this way though. Some labors hurt worse than others. Women who have inductions with pitocin or have back labor have more pain than usual. So women who say that their pain was excruciating are telling the truth. It really was for them.

There are ways that you can minimize your pain beforehand without drugs.
~Take a good empowering childbirth class. Not one that tells you how to be a good girl and do what you're told, but one that gives you good information. The Bradley Method, Birthing from within and Hypnobirthing are good for this.
~Hire a doula. Having a professional birth assistant there is worth her weight in gold. She can help you get the kind of birth you want and make giving birth easier with a calm presence to communicate your wishes to your birth providers.
~Use water for your birth. Not necessarily giving birth in water, but at least laboring in warm water really feels good. They call it the "midwives epidural" and it has no druggy side effects
~Find a health care provider that listens to your concerns and will honor your wishes. If you have a doctor that brushes aside your concerns, this is the time to find a new one.

Best of luck to you and Happy Birthing!

Yes, natural child birth hurts a lot. The key is learning to manage it. You should definitely enroll in a lamaze type of class and read up on different ways to manage the pain. (water, birthing ball, positions, relaxation, etc.)

Even if you decide you might need some pain medication, read up on the different types of medication and the pros/cons of it.

Personally, I didn't want the epidural. I'd read that it could slow down my labor--which would make them give me more pitocin, it could mess with my blood pressure--so they'd have to give me more drugs, it could be administered incorrectly--so it could still hurt, I wouldn't be able to feel the urge to push--so I could be pushing for hours. After pushing for hours, I might need a C-section and they may need to use forceps, vacuum, and/or an episotomy.

My sis-in-law had an epidural and pushed for 3 hours. My other sis-in-law pushed for 2 hours and ended up with a C-section.

I had 2 doses of Phentenol which gave me enough of a break to manage the pain. My labor was relatively short for the 1st time (10.5 hours), I pushed for 10 minutes, and my baby had an APGAR score of 9.9. The hardest part for me was the last 30 minutes (8cm-10cm). My contractions were coming every 60 seconds and lasting 45 seconds-- It was very intense and painful. Overall, I'm glad I went mostly nautral--I feel like my labor went really well.

Just be well-read and go with the flow--

It really hurts but the reward in the end is really awesome when u hold that new life in your arms for the first time. I had both my children naturally with my first I did 11hrs of labor and 15 with my second child. U have to have a good support coach some body to really help u through the really rought times. It's really something when I tell people that I had natural birth. I wouldn't have it any other way, u have to do what is best for u. There was times when I felt like I couldn't do it but I thank the Lord for my husband and the nurse's for the support. Good Luck and remember do what's best for U.

Don't let what people say effect how you wish to give birth...I haven't had my baby yet but it doesn't matter what others think. You handle pain differently then others. And doctors don't care to do c-sections unless they have to...plan to do it naturally..worse comes to worse you can always have an epidural. I don't want one preferably because it takes away the feeling and you don't know when to push. But they also offer other pain meds like morphine. Don't listen to others it will only get you worked up!! I am due any day now and I am not worried about how it will feel...I know it'll hurt..I'll more than likely cry more then the baby...but as long as he comes out healthy I could care less!!

Girl?...Listen every one is different as well as every ones ability to handle pain is different. I know a few people who have had several children naturally with no type of anesthesia or pain relief. And I know people who had to run and have an epidural or c-section because they couldn't handle it. Don't worry we're all scared, but the closer you come to your due date you will make up your mind, as to what you want to do. I myself was contemplating the epidural many people on here recommended it to me, but I'm still scared of it......But again maybe when that pain kicks in, I'll be begging for it?....Good luck!

I had Stadol with my first two children and nothing at all with my third (he can too quick). I'm 17 weeks pregnant now and with this child, I want no drugs like I had with my third. It was definitly a more painful birth, but I felt %100 better afterwards because I had no drugs in my system.

Whatever pain you endure during labor is definetly worth it when you hold your new baby in your arms.
