Older floppy disks had to be formatted before they could be used. This was typical back in the days before Windows, and you would do it using a DOS command. You should be able to format yours using a Run command, but be very careful that you specify the correct drive. The command would be FORMAT A:
(A: being the floppy drive). Also, be aware that if there are any files on that disk, they will be erased.

a very common problem. you can try to format the disk or just use another one. If you have data on the disk that you want, you might try it in another computer and save it to another floppy if it can be read.

Floppies are notorious for either going bad or giving incorrect read/write errors. I would try it on another puter or two -- if the same error occurs, it may be toast and you'll need a recover program like GetDataBack. Whatever you do, don't let Windows reformat the disk...

I know you don't want to hear this, but either the floppy disk itself is BAD or your floppy drive is bad. I will lean more to the former. Floppys are notorious for being bad, EVEN IF BRAND NEW.
