don't run around when you've got a cold. u need plenty of rest and lots of fluids. don't worry if you can't sleep, even resting is good for your body. and you don't have to take sleeping pills, but you can take a non addictive medication like valerium or a tylenol pm. that's what i take when i can't sleep and it's great cause it's non addictive.
your cold gets worse when you're lying down because you're congested and gravity doesnt help. you need to take an expectorant, something to help you expectorate any gunk you may have in your lungs (see your doc for that). try to do some deep breathing and cough a lot. try sleeping with your head propped on a few pillows, that way you're not aaalll the way up, but you're not laying down flat either.
whatever it is, it's just probably a nasty bug that's going around and found itself into you.

If sleeping pills are out, I imagine you don't want to have a few drinks to knock yourself out either.
Try taking a hot shower; if you're lucky it will relax you. If your nose is stuffy, the hot water and steam will help drain it, which should help you lie down.
And at worst, if you don't fall asleep, at least you'll be cleaner and won't feel as icky.

Vics vapor rub works good.
Prop your head up with two pillows.
If you can get it; a water machine that sprays a mist in the air by your bed works very well.
Hope you feel better.
