Symptoms include high blood pressure, protein in the urine, headaches, blurred vision, water retention in hands, legs and feet. If left untreated, can lead to maternal seizures and can be fatal to mother and baby. Diuretics, low salt diets and close monitoring of the mothers labs is very important. Bed rest may be necessary, also. If the pregnancy is far enough along, sometimes labor is induced. Good luck!

pre-clampsia is where the blood circulation becomes high it affects the blood pressure in pregnant woman the signs are:

elevated blood pressure 140/90 or higher
persistant headache
vision problems
pain in the right upper abdomen
test results indicating high uric acid in the urine
swelling of the hands and face

if this is not treated right away it can cause liver damage prob. for the mother ,deprive oxygen to the baby and cause seizures in the mother once the baby is born the blood pressure can take up to 6 weeks to return to normal you have every reason for concern as women are supposed to have complete bed rest till the baby is born

it is a combination of symptoms, including high blood pressure, protein leaking in the urine, and generalized swelling that can manifest itself anywhere from 20 weeks on till delivery (very rarely after). i believe the basic problem is leaky blood vessels (therefore proteins can squeeze out of the vessels into the urine, and fluid can leak out of vessels into the tissues, leading to swelling). it is a huge mystery in the OB world what causes it, but fortunately can be treated. some women take medication to control their blood pressure, others are just monitored.

the danger is that if untreated, it can lead to seizures, with resulting danger to baby. since your sister has been diagnosed, you can feel confident that she will be just fine, as long as she follows her doctor's orders. she should let her doc know if she gets double vision, headaches, pain in her upper right abdomen, or abnormal nausea and vomiting.

congratulations grandma!

preclamsia is high blood pressure when you are pregnant. you do have to be careful because you dont want it to get bad, i had it when i was pregnant they made me take a big jug home and i had to pee in it for 24 hrs then take it back to them so they could test it. mine was not really bad but i did swell alot and the doctor told me to quit work stay off my feet keep them up and get lots of rest. she should be fine as long as she does what the doctors tell her i hope everything is fine and good luck and congratulations on the arrival of your grand baby!!!

It is high blood pressure and from what I just read on the internet it could cause a premature birth. Tell her to be careful and stay in contact with her doc.

It is also known as toxemia. It is characterized by hypertension, sudden weight gain, proteinuria(blood in the urine), and swelling in the face, hands, and feet. It can be dangerous to her and the baby! Hope it turns out alright for both.
