you do not need to avoid your cats like the plague. the bacteria you are worried about is toxoplasma gondii, which can indeed cause problems in baby. it is only a problem if you ingest the bacteria (it's not airborne), but the amount you would need to ingest is so large i wouldn't worry about it.

i had to change the litter for a time - i changed it, then turned around and washed my hands. no big deal. don;t neglect the kitties - and don't get rid of them! studies show that kids who grow up in a house with pets are LESS likely to have allergies to those animals.

congrats!

We had 2 cats when my wife was pregnant. Our son is now 16, and healthy as a horse.

The problem you're thinking of is a bacteria that is present in cats feces. I was the one that changed the cat litter, and cleaned up around the litter box. I would always wash my hands well after. You should be sure to wash up after touching the cats, but you probably don't need to totally avoid them while you're pregnant.

As always, talk to your doctor for the final answer. He/she will have more than anecdotal advice for you.

Just think of all the families that have pet kitties. They don't get rid of their dear family pets just because they're welcoming a baby! Just don't go near the cats' litter. You will be fine.

Yes stay away from kitties and dont touch their litter. Avoid them like the plague (its bad). Your baby's health depends on it.

Just don't touch the litterbox.
Touching the cats should be o.k.
