Characterization is how the author makes the character come alive. He can do this in 5 ways: the character's actions, his speech (how he says things like inflection); letting us listen to the character's inner thoughts; revealing what other characters say about the character; describing how the character looks and dresses. There is also direct and indirect characterization. Direct characterization occurs when the author tells us everything about the character. Indirect characterization occurs when the author lets us decide.
The Cask of Amontillado is full of irony; specifically verbal and dramatic. An example of verbal irony would be when Montresor tells Fortunato how well he looks. An example of dramatic irony occurs when Montresor pulls out a trowel when Fortunato questions him about being a mason. We know that Montresor is going to use the trowel to cement Fortunato in the wall.

Characterization refers to how the author helps you understand what the characters are like. In other words, the characters have traits - for example they might be selfish or generous, cowardly or brave, outgoing or shy, etc.

The author shows you what the character is like instead of telling you. That is called characterization. For example, instead of just telling you, "Steve was very smart," the author might write about how Steve did really well in school and always knew the answers and read lots of books. Instead of writing "Joe was disloyal," the writer shows Joe betraying a friend. So you realize from that that Joe is disloyal.

I read Cask of Amontillado years ago and can't remember it specifically. But when talking about characterization you want to think about what kind of person the main character is. Also, does his personality change? Does he learn a lesson? Then give examples from the story that show his personality and how it changes.

Hope that helps.
