Hi there, as I mentioned above about transimission, this 1991 G Voyager 3.3 and have almost 250+ miles ( I know they are a lot) well just wondering that its not going into second and third gear suddenly, as what happened actually that I was driving in rain and suddenly all the gauge/lights start flashing and then after a while the gauges stopped working, I parked the car, it was driving OK and called the mechanic and he said may be the computer problem, we did a test drive and felt that its not changing gears, mechanic change the computer and the gauges came back on but tranny didn't. So is there any relation between the gauges and tranny and is it worth to fix it and how much would it cost, I am from Detroit,MI area so anyone around from here. Many thanks in advance.

Are you sure it's stuck in 1st gear? If my memory serves correctly the trans will default to 2nd gear...otherwise known as 'Limp Mode' if it thinks something is wrong.

If the transmission was NOT slipping before it quit, then it could have been a computer problem...it sounds like you may have an overall electrical problem.
Do you know how to check the computer codes? If not turn the key on-off 2 times then leave it on the 3rd time.
So (quickly)...on, off, on, off, on
You can find the computer fault codes (and the procedure) listed on http://www.allpar.com/fix/80s-codes.html

Before you scrap it, check the computer for codes and discuss with the mechanic. (or have him do it).

It's POSSIBLE that there was a short in the transmission 'solenoid valve pack'...that's the funny looking pack on the top (toward the radiator) with all the wires going into it and it caused the electrical fault. ( Just possible)
If it's bad, you may be able to get one from a salvage yard cheap enough to try...(better than replacing the whole transmission...about $130 new from my local auto parts store)

By the way, I have a 1990 Grand Caravan with 248k miles on it...swapped out the transmission 4 years ago and still going strong.
Good Luck!

the car has alot of miles on it, it is possible that the trasmission needs servicing. I believe the manual says to change the trans mission fluid at 90,000 miles and have the bands adjusted, so if you have never done this it is possible that the transmission just gave out. In a 1991 grand voyager the computer has no real control on the transmission other than shift points. My advice is be happy with the milage you got out of it and look for a new car, because it is not worth rebuilding those transmissions, it will cost more than the car is worth.

what form of truck do you've? Do you've a 4L60E transmission? is this a a million/2 ton truck? if so,this can be the feared P1870 code. Get the codes scanned because iirc the P1870 does no longer continuously vacation the examine engine gentle. This has some thing to do with the valve body boring out the valve sleeve. If the trans isn't too a techniques alongside, a Sonnax valve-sleeve put in by technique of an outstanding, self reliant transmission save would circumvent from an finished rebuild.
