w-3/8 -5-w/4 = 4w-1/8 -1

8w-24/8 - 10-2w/8 = 32w-8/8 - 1

w-24 - 10 - 2w = 32w - 8 -1

w - 2w - 32w = 14 -8 -1

-w -32w =5

31w =5

w = 5/31

No, you didn't do it correctly. I can't even tell what you're trying to do in the first step - parts of it look like you're multiplying both sides of the equation by 8, but you leave the -1 on the end unchanged. Based on the way you combine the terms, I also don't think you even wrote the problem correctly - you treat 10-2w/8 as though it were (10-2w)/8, even though that is not how the problem is written. Anyway, IF the problem is written correctly (and I am nearly certain it isn't), w=-17/13, not 5/31.

w-3/8 -5-w/4=4w-1/8-1
8w-3-40-2w=32w-1-8
6w-43=32w-9
-34=26w
w=-34/26=-17/13

if by this you mean

((w - 3)/8) - (5 - w)/4) = ((4w - 1)/8) - 1

Multiply everything by 8

(w - 3) - 2(5 - w) = (4w - 1) - 8
w - 3 - 10 + 2w = 4w - 1 - 8
3w - 13 = 4w - 9
-w = 4
w = 4
