I have driven across the country 4 times in the last 11 months. I have seen a great deal of female big rig drivers.
It was very common.

I have driven an 18-wheeler for 30 yrs. Although this field is predominately favored by men, I think many men feel the woman's place is in the home, and are somewhat intimidated by the fact that they too, can handle big rigs. I also believe(personally) that most woman, (my g/f included) don't really care for "long hauls".......shoot, she even has a prob with driving to OC Md which is about 2 1/2hrs away. Try driving 10-15 hrs everyday, and then factor in the other BS that goes with the job. I don't think there's anything wrong with female drivers, but I do think men are better equipped and suited for the grueling task, not to mention some of the heavy lifting involved with unloading those bad boys!

Tractor trailers have become much easier to drive over the last few years. I have been driving for the last 5 years and am still surprised when a woman climbs out of the cab. Even more surprised when she is actually attractive. Truck driving most of the time is a dirty, nasty job. In another 50 years women are going to own everything and control everything. This is just one more area they are taking over.

I'm a female with a Class A CDL with doubles and triple endorsements. I used to run piggybacks....semi-tractors stacked in such a fashion that they go down the road like a train. The first one (the 'horse') pulls the other three.

This is an EXTREME specialty in the trucking industry. At the time I was one of only FIVE women in the USA that did it. I was the ONLY one who had the skill to back a set of 'pigs' up!!!! Most male drivers won't even drive piggybacks, no less have the skill it takes to back them up!!!!!

BTW: This is a question better suited to the forums in http://www.layover.com ;) :D

Gender doesn't matter in truck driving anymore. I see good and bad drivers of both genders in all manners of vehicles. When I ran truck driving schools, I enjoyed teaching the female students more than the males because they didn't come into school with the macho "I know how to drive" attitude that some male students exhibited. They wanted to learn and usually did. Once on the road, female drivers usually use what they learned instead of reverting to bad habits to "impress" other drivers.

because of the myth that trucks do not have powersteering. Women are actually better more willing to move over truck drivers when I come racing up.
