Physics is a very broad term. It encompasses just about everything, in some way. As far as modern day physics applications, there are lots.

Lockhead Martin was given the contract to design a new space shuttle that will be able to reach Mars and beyond. Engineering the designs of such a vehicle is all about physics, as well as chemistry as far as fuel composition.

Mostly because they want to understand (curiosity is pretty powerful, isn't it?).

Most aren't in it for practical applications. Thing is, you never know when things end up having practical applications, or what they will be.
