OK! I live in LA and am a huge Laker fan so you could trust me. The L.A. Lakers are originally from Minneapolis. Minneapolis is know for it's lakes as is Michigan. It's in the ''Great Lakes'' area. that's why they are called the Lakers. when they moved to L.A. in 1960, they kept the name because it's catchy.

hope this answers your question dawg!

They were originally the Minnesota Lakers (Minnesota, the land of 10,000 lakes). Other teams that moved but kept names that referred to their previous home towns:
Utah Jazz (originally from New Orleans)
Los Angeles Clippers (formerly the San Diego Clippers, refers to the tall ships that sail in San Diego Bay)

In a switch, the Houston Rockets used to be the San Diego Rockets, so they ended up moving to a city where their name was much more fitting than it was in their previous home town.

They were bought from Ben Berger and Morris Chalfen in 1946. The team was called Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League and the team relocated to Minneapolis, Minnesota. They got the name from the 1,000 lakes they have. The team moved to Los Angeles in 1960.

yeah like people said, its becuase they used to be the Minnesota Lakers. They moved to LA in 1960 and kept the name. This is the same thing that happened to the Utah Jazz, salt lake city is not famous for their jazz, but they used to be from New Orleans.

They used to be the Minnesota Lakers, hence the hundreds of lakes in Minnesota. They retained their name when they moved to LA.
