Who says you're not being supportive when you stay out of his way. If you've expressed to him that you are behind him 100% and will be there when he needs you, then you've done your part and the ball is in his court. All of us need space, and loving someone means knowing when to give it to them. I'm sure he's stressed, so anytime he mentions his classes, offer a word of encouragement and leave it alone.

You can be supportive without being at his beck and call.
Tell him where you will be if he needs your help during his studies. In a calm voice, when he gets irritable, let him understand that you know he is stressed, but that you are not there for him to take out his frustrations on. Then go and do your own thing.
Good luck

If he is like that now what until he passes the test and has to be on an ambulance-- its more stressful than studing-- some stay that way but most leave their EMS JOB at the door if not it might be a rocky road to hold good luck

Tell him that you want to be supportive but he keeps running you away. Also give him time to process that and then approach the subject with kid gloves until the two of you can agree on how to go forth together.

Simple, flop down on the floor and tell him you need mouth to mouth.
