What kind of weather would a person find in a regular Pittsburgh winter?
In terms of temperature range...
How often does it snow? -- And are snow events in rare but big bursts, or constant flurries?
What kind of recreation activity would someone be able to find there winter-related?

Pittsburgh weather seems very extreme to those that have not experienced extreme weather... We have winter. It snows. Usually oone to three big snows in January and ligt snow before and after. Seven Springs is a great ski Resort an hour outside of the city... There is also Hidden Valley a few miles past Seven Springs. In less than two hours you can be in Deep Creek, MD which is home to Wisp (Deep Creek is pretty popular for weekend getaways year round... Maybe like Pittsburgh's version of the Hamptons?) There are many other options too, those are the biggest that are close... Being a skiier/snowboarder in Pittsburgh is not a problem....

Pittsburgh also has a lot of great parks (a few of which have ski slopes!) But all are very hilly and great for sled riding.

Roads are pretty well maintained, especially the main roads, but there is still need for caution...

The city is beatiful in the wintertime.... every neighborhood is thouroughly decorated for the holidays and the downtown skating rink is beautiful...

Also winter happens to fall during football season which is a big deal in Pittsburgh (The city is not just about football though... even though it may seem that way)

I am from Wisconsin. Lived on lake Michigan for 26 years. I have lived in Florida for 6. Wisconsin is colder than a MF'er and Florida is hotter than a MF'er. And Pittsburgh is somewhere inbetween. But closer to Wisconsin's temps. But not quite that cold. Tolerable with nice springs. Not those extremely cold springs with a super cold wind off the icy lake where it never gets above 55 degrees until July type cold. But Pittsburgh has its moments.

i'd not fly into both. State college has its own airport (SCE) and Delta, United, and US Air all fly there. And a short seem on Expedia exhibits its surely about $50 more desirable severe priced to fly there from New Orleans than Philly or Pittsburgh.
