Pentiums processor have different sockets. Such as Socket A, 478. You need to make sure that the mother board it has the right pin pattern for your new processor.

RAM, HD, etc. have nothing to do with it.

Only thing that matters is motherboard socket type. If your motherboard has a socket 370 type, it may be able to take a Pentium II, a Celeron or a Pentium 3 chip.

What will also be a factor is bus speed, which will dictate the max speed of the CPU that is compatible. Sounds like you need to identify the make and model of the motherboard, find their website via Google, and take a look at the user's guide for that particular unit.

No, but it really depends on the socket type as someone previously mentioned. Take it to a professional, and they will tell you.

Watch out for those heatsinks, though, I've seen some Pentium II's with massive heatsinks.

Most Pentium II boards have a 100 mhz buss setting, and the multipliers go up to 5.5 (so you could run a PIII 550 Mhz processor).

It all depends upon the main board!

I have tons of boards that would do it, bought at salvage, locally, and on the web, and, on ebay. Cheap!

BUT, I MUST run Linux to actually get the 50x Speed boost, to make it worth my time! http://pclinuxos.com or DSL

I comprehend what you're attempting to do yet a Celeron D is a distinctive pin configuration a (775). besides.....it is available that a bios replace might help or the CPU isn't any sturdy.

2 requirements: mobo must be i440BX chipset and the CPU is Slot 1 type of low MHz (only low-end P3 can go in high-end P2 mobo)

Also the manual of that i440BX mobo must say it can take P3; and bus speed is 100 MHz. Oh my spare computer is a P3-rized i440BX, my friend's spare machine is a low-end i440BX P3.
